Éponine is released from prison, and sadly tells Marius Cosette’s address. They meet, and are immediately enamored with each other. The Patron Minette escape from prison, and attempt to raid the house, but Éponine screams to warn the neighborhood. Hearing the scream, Valjean thinks that Javert must have found out his cover, so he prepares to leave to England, troubling Marius and Cosette. Marius asks for his grandfather’s permission to marry Cosette, but he tells him to make her his mistress, which insults Marius. He leaves. The next day, Les Amis have started the revolt, and they build barricades in narrow streets. Javert comes as a spy, but Gavroche exposes him and they tie him to a pole. Marius joins them, not wanting to live without Cosette. A soiled fires at him, but Éponine, disguised as a man, takes the bullet. She says that she wanted them to die together, or to die before he did. She gives him a letter from Cosette telling their address. He sends a farewell letter to her, which Valjean finds. At first he is very worried and distressed thinking that Cosette will not love him anymore if Marius lives, but then takes comfort in the fact that he will die soon. Still wanting her to be happy, though, he puts on a National Guard uniform and goes to the barricade to save Marius.
